New from The Black Angels

The Black Angels took to its website today to release a new single off of its upcoming album, Indigo Meadow. Titled "Don't Play With Guns," the track is the first material we've gotten from the Angels since their 2012 single, "Watch Out Boy"/"I'd Rather Be Lonely," and Austin's premier psychedelic band does not disappoint!

The band's fourth studio album, Indigo Meadown will be released on April 2nd.

New STONE FOXES

The Stone Foxes' new album Small Fires, is out February 12, but the San Francisco-based outfit recently released the music video for the leading track, "Everybody Knows." Shot somewhere in downtown SF, the video was inspired by Edgar Allen Poe's "A Tell Tale Heart." Check IT OUT.

Two of my favorite New York-based bands dropped some new tunes recently.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs: "Suck Your Blood." Soooo sexy.

nu record: Lysandre by Christopher Owens

What a difference four years can make. Yes, there are hints of Girls on Lysandre, particulary on "Here We Go Again" and the way the album seems to dip its fingers into as many genres as possible, but overall Lysandre is exactly what I expected from Christopher Owens' first solo album--something he was itching to make, something he could not have made with Girls. Just under 29 minutes long, the album features folky acoustic guitar, flutes on the majority of its tracks, a powerhouse 1980s sax solo, the slightly reggae-ish vibes on "Riviera Rock"(my least favorite track--it doesn't feature Chris on vocals), and of course the familiar narrative songwriting style we can expect from Chris Owens. I love it all.

Mike Madden of Consequence of Sound nailed this album in his review. Check it out! Then go get yourself a copy of Lysandre. If you purchase the album at a local record store, you get a free copy of the Lysandre Theme sheet music. (My copy is making a cameo at the top right of the picture!)

Only a couple more days

Photos from Hedi Slimane's Rock Diary portrait series
I cannot stop listening to this--Christopher Owens offers all the accessibility of pop tunes but packaged thoughtfully, unapologetically and gorgeously in indie rock compositions that are sometimes minimal and other times powered by baroque elements. His first solo album drops the 15th (14th in Europe), but is streaming in multiple locations on the interwebs, like here and here, accompanied by awesome articles that offer insight into the dissolution of Girls and the writing process/story behind Lysandre.

Save the Date : FEBRUARY 7

WILD WILD WETS is returning to San Francisco on February 7th!! The band throws down loud garage rock and roll with post punk and psychedelic flavors--particularly during live shows when it has a projection artist lighting the entire stage, so come out next month for the wettest show you will ever experience. Until then, check out Wild Wild Wets' track "Realized Into Redwood" over at the band's bandcamp page.

The band will be blowing up Thee Parkside along with The Spyrals, Barbarian and Nectarine Pie. Let's make these San Diegans feel at home. Come out and support California homegrown music!
